on
March 17, 2023

Deep in the Natural Park of the Friulian Dolomites there is a lake with a hidden secret. One that took the homes away from inhabitants from three neighboring villages. The lake is very mysterious, yet magical, by making it a timeless place that give strong emotions at different times of the year, depending on the relations to the level of its waters.

Being an aritifial reservoir, it is periodically emptied exposing its mysteries to be discovered. As the water recedes you see the re-emergence of a ghost, the remains of the Village of Movada,

LAKE REDONA – HOW TO GET THERE

Getting to the lake is easy depending on where you are coming from. Just click on the link, it will automatically guide you with your smartphone.

When arriving parking can be limited. I recommend two places to park, arriving early is alway good depending on the time of year.

The first option from the parking lot you will immediately see the village of Movara and you can reach it by down a path that is nearby. Be careful going down it is a little steep. If you end up parking in front of the Locanda al Lago, to get to the village you will have to walk along the road until you arrive to Da Febo. CAUTION: There is NO sidewalk and you will have to pay attention to fast moving vehicles.

WHEN TO SEE THE VILLAGE OF MOVADA

The Village of Movada is not visible all year round but only during the dry periods of Lake Redona. Then when can you see it?

You can see the submerged village in the winter months from December to mid-February. During this period you can find it partially submerged, just like the photo above. As the dry season, summer period, you will discover that the water levels recede enough to where you can actually walk into the three remaining houses.

I recommend you bring adequate footwear, since it is muddy.

THE HISTORY OF LAKE REDONA

Before the construction of the Meduno power plant and the bridge Ponte Racli dam, there were three small villages (Movara, Fluer and Redona), which was inhabited for generations by a small population.

Life in these villages was completely turned upside down in the beginning of the 1950s when it was decided to build a a power plant and bridge dam in the Valley of Tramontina. These structures together prevented the water from the river of Meduna from continuing, therefore flooding the valley and consuming the three villages therefore disappearing from maps.
