JAPAN’S GREAT CORAL BARRIER REEF IS IN OKINAWA PERFECTURE

On one of my travels, while living in Japan, I had the chance to visit Miyako-Jima. It is truly a hidden gem! The beaches are pure with bright waters that are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.

One place that you must really try to see is Yabiji. It is one of the largest coral reefs and it is located 15 km north of the Miyako-Jima. There you can find over 100 coral reefs in about 119 sq km. A myriad of tropical fish flocks to this colorful area making it Miyako’s prime diving and snorkeling spot.

GETTING THERE

You will have to find a charter boat or a tour company to get out there. I went with Aza Ikema Diving Service. They provide you a boat ride to the area along with the snorkel gear needed to enjoy the underwater beauty. I had brought my own gear and managed to bring it on board.

PREPARATION

Keep in mind that you will be out in the middle of the ocean for a while. Prepare the best you can. This is how I did it.

  • Clothing – Bring a wet suit or bathing suit along with a towel. An extra set of clothing wouldn’t be a bad idea for after you get back to the island.
  • Footwear – I brought some water shoes that go with my diving fins.
  • Water – I brought two two-liter water bottles on board with me. I was out there for about 6 hours. You definitely want to stay hydrated out there. The sun and humidity can dehydrate you rather quickly.
  • Food/Snacks – I brought a couple of sandwiches on this trip. I went to a nearby convenience store to prep for this one.

Also, bring a GoPro or any other underwater type camera. You will witness some interesting things. I got lucky that someone in my travel group had a drone. So I want to give him some credit for those pics.

JUST DIVE

Let the boat captain take you to this marvelous place. Once you arrive you will be given time to explore the ocean. Enjoy yourself and escape the above water life and take in the beauty this world has to offer that is not always visible.

CONCLUSION

If you are looking for a place while in Okinawa that is not very popular or known. This is the place to go. The waters are some of the clearest waters I have encountered in my travels and there is plenty of coral and fish to admire.

I am happy that I got to experience some desert landscapes. It has a unique beauty with some of it is unforgettable. Overall, I love being near the sea. I miss it and wish to make it back to Japan and explore it further.
