Gole Dell’Alcantara: Your Ultimate Guide To Sicily’s Stunning Gorge

on
April 19, 2024

Deep in the foothills of Mount Etna, the Gole dell’Alcantara Gorge awaits, a hidden natural gem that beckons to adventure seekers like me. Carved out by the Alcantara River over thousands of years, this unique landscape is a thrilling alternative to the sun-soaked beaches of Sicily. As I stepped into this natural wonder, I felt the pulse of ancient volcanic forces and the icy and refreshing embrace of the river.

The Geological Marvel

The Gole dell’Alcantara is a testament to the raw power of what nature can produce. Its 50-meter-high walls, formed from crystallized lava, stand as a reminder of the Alcantara River’s force. The river’s icy cold water relentlessly carved its way through the rock, leaving behind an incredible natural work of art. The prism-like basalt columns and towering rocky walls seem almost otherworldly, shaped by millennia of erosion.

The first thing that struck me was the clarity of the water. It was so transparent that I could see every pebble on the riverbed. The Alcantara River, fed by the melting snow from Mount Etna, flowed gently between towering basalt columns. These hexagonal pillars, formed by volcanic activity, stood like ancient sentinels, guarding the secrets of the gorge.

Canyoning Adventures

For the more adventurous souls, canyoning is the ultimate way to experience Gole Dell’Alcantara. Armed with a wetsuit, helmet, and a sense of daring, you can rappel down waterfalls, slide over smooth rocks, and leap into crystal-clear pools. The adrenaline rush is addictive, and the views from within the gorge are awe-inspiring.

Since, I didn’t have equipment I booked a tour with Sicily Adventures. They will equipped me with all the necessary gear (helmet, neoprene wetsuit, and life jacket), accompanied by an expert guide, which took me to explore the most beautiful and hidden corners of the canyon. I guarantee you an adrenaline-rich experience and fun with them!

Getting to Gole dell’Alcantara

From Taormina, Catania, and Messina

  • Taormina: A mere 30-minute drive from Taormina, the Gole dell’Alcantara is approximately 20 kilometers away. The location is now marked on Google Maps, making it easier to find. The main entrance, part of the Botanical and Geological Garden, offers ample parking. Technically free, they now ask for a donation. This entrance provides access to the elevator that descends into the gorge, an option for families with young children. The admission fee here is €13.00 per adult, including the lift, but I found the extra cost unnecessary.
  • Catania and Messina: Both cities are about a 50-minute drive from the gorge. For a more local experience, head 150 meters further up the road past the main entrance. Here, locals use another entrance with stairs (relatively easy to walk but steep in areas). The admission fee is significantly lower, approximately €2.00 per adult. Skip the elevator and take the stairs—it’s worth it!

What to Expect

  • Cold Waters: The Alcantara River’s waters are frigid, around 8 degrees Celsius. Summer is the best time to visit, as the water is more inviting.
  • Limited Access: While the gorge stretches for about 400 meters, only a small section is accessible to the public for safety reasons. Guided tours are available for exploring the area above the Gole.
  • Local Charm: Opt to stay near the gorge to beat the crowds. We chose Agripark Gole Alcantara, an agriturismo along the road leading to the park. Early access allows you to enjoy the gorge without the hustle and bustle.

Practical Details

  • Entrance Fees: The main entrance charges €13.00 per adult (including the elevator) or €8.00 for entrance only. For a more budget-friendly option, use the local entrance for approximately €2.00.
  • Opening Hours: In summer, the gorge is accessible from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Check for any variations.
  • Dress Comfortably: Wear sturdy shoes for walking and exploring the rocky terrain. Bring also water shoes to trek the river. If you don’t have any, there is a stand selling them at the entrance.

Why You Should Visit Gole Dell’Alcantara
