Five Of The Best Cocktail Bars In Ortigia Sicily
Ortigia is a wonderful place to take in Syracuse’s rich history. Inhabited for about 3,000 years, it is the second Greek colony that was founded by the Corinthians in 743 B.C. Its cultural, architectural and artistic preservation are evident in Ortigia once you explore it, it becomes apparent why this place is a UNESCO site.
Ortigia’s Best Cocktail Bars
After spending the day looking at what Ortigia has to offer and the sun begins to set into the horizon, it is time to wind down and take in the night vibe. There are plenty of restaurants and cocktail bars everywhere and it can become burdens to chose one. Well, I got you. This is a list of my favorites cocktail bars that serve food with no specific order.
B.O.A.T.S (Based On A True Story)
Right in front of the splendid columns of the Temple of Apollo you will find a place that is equivalent to sailing in a vintage vessel that will service you with some unique cocktails along with some of the classics. Its wooden craftsmanship and decor are accented with art from local artists.
If you happen to get hungry as you continue your evening, there is no need to leave the BOAT, no pun intended. They also have a dinner menu that is worth taking a look at. Their dishes are inspired by local tradition that can be paired with your drink that create a unique palatal sensation.
Cortile Verga
Considered to many, “The best “secret” place to enjoy cocktails”, Cortile Verga is hidden inside a private courtyard that was once a palace of the Sicilian aristocracy. Not too far from Piazza Archimede you will find this hidden gem. If you were walking by and not looking for it, you could easily miss it.
What I love about this place is the size of the courtyard it has. With ample spacing it can take quite a crowd. There is also seating inside that has a more classical feel to it. The ambiance is perfect to start any night around Ortigia, or to just stay there to finish the night. There is a food menu that offers aperitif, as you enjoy the evening.
M.O.O.N. (Move Ortigia Out of Normality)
Where is the MOON? No, not that moon. This MOON is a physical place, culture centre, a bar, a bistro, an exhibition space and meeting place. As you walk in you are welcomed by the bar and seating space that is very welcoming.
Not only does this place serve the classic cocktails, it has some unique specially crafted drinks to offer, like a Bloody Kimchi (Vodka, Kimchi extract, tomato juice, black pepper) or a Pearl of Caribbean (Dark Rum, roasted pineapple juice, coconut water, roasted pineapple bitter). It is also vegan restaurant that serves amazing food. NOTE: I am not vegan, but I recommend you try the food.
Chiodo Showroom
Located in Via Roma, Chiodo Showroom started off as a simple craft workshop and a space for the arts. Where local artist could come and share their creativity, organize exhibits and performances of all kinds. Today it is mostly a restaurant that gives some space to promote independent local craftsmanship.
There cocktails are limited, but the environment and the food really make this place be on the list. Its outside court is a great place to enjoy the weather where as the inside is cozy where the staff will make you feel comfortable.
Barcollo
Located near the Piazza Duomo, Barcollo has a beautiful courtyard adorned by tall trees, and flowers. Right in the heart of Ortigia, Barcollo does not disappoint with its excellent selection of carefully crafted cocktails, wines, beers, and aperitifs.
Barcollo was recognized as the Top 30 Cocktail Bar of the Year in 2021, by Bar Giornale’s (Bar Magazine) Barawards. This place can get crowded in the high season. I recommend you make reservations.
