About Rovinj
Rovinj, a picturesque town on Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula, boasts a rich and varied history. Originally a settlement of Venetian or Illyrian tribes, it was later captured by the Romans, who named it Arupinium. Over the centuries, Rovinj came under Byzantine, Frankish, and Venetian rule, each leaving its mark on the town’s architecture and culture. The Venetians fortified Rovinj with walls and gates, remnants of which can still be seen today.
In 1763, the town was connected to the mainland by filling in the channel that once separated it. Yes, you heard that right, Rovinj was an island. After the fall of Venice, Rovinj became part of the Austrian Empire, and later, the Kingdom of Italy, before finally joining Yugoslavia post-World War II. Today, Rovinj’s historical charm and coastal beauty make it a beloved destination for travelers.
Day 1 (Friday Evening): Arrival and First Impressions
As we were driving into the town, we knew we were in for a treat. It was Friday evening when we saw the town’s vibrant colors. The sun was directly amplifying its beauty and its charming streets were welcoming us with open arms. All we had to do is park the vehicle.
Travel Note: Parking is not possible in the old town. Park in the zones that are 25 euros a day. Made the mistake in parking in a zone were we paid 65 for the first day. Here is one of them.
After checking into our quaint little Airbnb, which was located a few steps from the harbor, we decided to dive straight into the local culture by exploring our new surroundings. We quickly noticed that it felt like we were in Italy. Signs are in both Croatian and Italian a true charm of the remnants of the Venetian influence. Our first stop was the iconic St. Euphemia’s Church, a stunning baroque building that dominates the skyline. Climbing to the top of the bell tower rewarded us with panoramic views of the town and the sparkling Adriatic Sea.
As the sun was setting, we decided to navigate the cobblestone streets. I don’t recommend you wear high heels ladies! Noticing how smooth and slick the stones are, it only led me to imagine how old these stones really are. How many people have walked through these streets causing them to erode into what they are today.
Eventually we decided to circumvent the coast, which led us to find a hidden gem nestled on the picturesque rocks of Santa Croce Street, Mediterraneo Bar. This marvelous place offers a unique escape into the serene ambiance of the Adriatic. With a sun setting, this charming bar is celebrated for its tranquil setting where the gentle lapping of the waves complements the clinking of glasses, creating a symphony of relaxation.
Mediterraneo Bar stands as a beacon of nightlife in Rovinj, inviting guests to unwind with a selection of fine wines, artisanal cocktails, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful spot to enjoy the sunset or a cozy corner to savor a nightcap, Mediterraneo Bar promises an experience that encapsulates the essence of Rovinj’s laid-back coastal lifestyle.
Day 2 (Saturday) : Beach Hopping and Historical Exploration
The next morning, we set out to explore Rovinj’s beautiful beaches. But first, we needed breakfast. As we wondered through the streets, nearby our stay, we found a place that offered a continental breakfast. We went for a brioche (croissant), omelets, orange juice and some cappuccino. With fuel in our bellies, were were ready to go.
We started at Lone Bay Beach, a popular spot known for its clear waters and relaxed vibe. After a refreshing swim, we rented bikes and headed to Golden Cape Forest Park (Zlatni Rt). This lush park is home to several hidden beaches, perfect for a more secluded experience. We also spent some time at Punta Corrente, enjoying the tranquility and natural beauty. In the afternoon we decided to towards the northern side of the town where we found this nice little bar called Porton Biondi. With sun beds, we were in total relaxation enjoying the view of the old town.
In the evening, we wandered through the old town, marveling at the well-preserved medieval architecture. Rovinj’s history dates back to the Roman times, and its strategic location made it a significant port throughout the centuries. The town’s Venetian influence is evident in its narrow streets and colorful buildings, a reminder of its past under Venetian rule. To make things romantic, we decided to watch the sunset from the harbor, making it one of our best days.
Day 3 (Sunday Morning): Farewell Rovinj
Our final day in Rovinj was all about soaking up the local lifestyle. We started breakfast, at a cozy spot with a fantastic view of the harbor. The ambiance was perfect for a romantic daytime walk. Next, we headed to Hermanos Couture for a little shopping. It is a unique boutique that captures the essence of style and sophistication. Hermanos Couture offers a shopping experience that is not intimate and exclusive.
After the boutique we couldn’t stop there. Looking stylish with new fashion on. We continued our journey towards the local market. It quickly captured our attention with a kaleidoscope of colors and aromas. We indulged in truffle-infused cheeses, olive oils, and the sweetest figs, each bite a testament to the region’s rich culinary heritage.
As the weekend drew to a close, we found ourselves at the harbor, watching the sunset one last time. Rovinj had cast its spell on me, a spell of beauty, tranquility, and romance. It was more than a getaway; it was a reminder of the simple joys of life, the beauty of nature, and the warmth of human connection.
Conclusion
As we started our drive back home, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for the magical time we had in Rovinj.
